Asking the hiring manager a couple of questions at the end of your interview is important to do.
By asking a few questions, you can learn a little bit more about the company and gain a better understanding of the position you are interested in filling. It also shows the employer that you are genuinely interested in working at the company and the role.
Below we have provided you with five questions you can ask at the end of your interview.
1. How would you describe the company culture?
This question is especially important since there are a lot of employees that have been working from home for the last 17 months. Since the start of the pandemic, company cultures have shifted to mostly online. By asking this question you’ll learn how the company maintained its culture virtually throughout the pandemic and how they plan on maintaining it or altering it post-COVID-19. This way you’ll be able to see if the company culture aligns with your own.
2. How do you see the company growing over the next few years?
This can help you determine if the company has any plans to evolve in the future and whether there is an opportunity for you to grow and develop within the company. It also shows the employer that you’re already looking ahead and interested in potential advancements for a long-term investment in the company.
3. What does a typical day look like in this position?
The answer to this question will give you a better idea about what tasks you will be doing on a day-to-day basis and whether they match what you are looking for. For example, if you are looking for a position that keeps you on your toes, but the position is more of a desk job, it may not be the best fit for you.
4. Are there any other key skills that can contribute to my success in this role?
For example, if the employer says sometimes you’ll be required to take on a leadership position within the company, it can help you determine if you are at a point in your career where you are open to taking on these types of challenges, even if it wasn’t written in the job description.
5. What expectations do you have for the candidate within their first three months in the role?
The answer to this question will give you insight into the onboarding and training process and integration into the company over the first few months. It will also help you determine what they expect you to get the hang of by the end of your probation period, so you can keep these expectations in mind if you do get hired.
Once you’ve asked the employer some questions that will help clarify the expectations of the role, you can wrap up the interview by asking a few more questions about next steps. For example:
When can I expect to hear from you about the role?
Is there anything else that I can provide you with – like references?
Do they have any more questions for you?
