Personal Branding During a Pandemic
Personal Branding During a Pandemic
Communications Specialist for Insperity, John Feldmann, says the job search process has changed in two major ways for job seekers:
Competition is higher than normal, as many candidates are applying for roles at companies that have not been heavily affected by the pandemic.
The rise in remote work has expanded job seekers’ opportunities beyond their geographic boundaries, increasing the overall talent pool.
Below is a summary of Feldmann’s tips on how job seekers can better market themselves and stand out to employers and hiring managers.
1. Clean up your portfolio and social media pages.
Before you begin making professional connections, Feldmann recommends ensuring your cover letter, résumé, LinkedIn profile, and other work‑related social platforms are fully updated. Use a professional photo, include relevant keywords in your résumé and cover letter, and add examples of your work—such as blog articles, marketing campaigns, or other projects—to strengthen your online presence.
2. Now you’re ready to network.
Feldmann suggests joining LinkedIn groups related to your field. This helps you make new connections and stay informed about industry trends and companies that are hiring.
You can also participate in online events and webinars. More companies are using platforms like Zoom to connect with clients and candidates in place of in‑person events.
3. Make sure you highlight your soft skills.
While you should still showcase your technical skills and creativity, Feldmann emphasizes the importance of highlighting soft skills as well. Are you strong at problem‑solving? Do you work well in a team? Do you have leadership abilities? During the pandemic, employers are especially interested in candidates who are adaptable, collaborative, and resilient—so your soft skills matter more than ever.
4. Become a “Subject Matter Expert.”
Feldmann explains, “There’s a big difference between those who are subject matter experts in their industry and those who struggle to look like they are in order to get hired.” He recommends creating and sharing content to demonstrate your expertise. This could include posting on social media, contributing to a blog, or sharing insights related to your field. Showing that you’re actively developing your skills can make a strong impression on employers.
