Improve Your Workday with these Productivity Tips

Although the province announced Monday (Feb. 8th) that regions will be slowly lifting some lockdown restrictions, it doesn’t mean that things are going back to normal.

We are still asked to work from home as much as possible and socially distance ourselves from family and friends to help fight the spread of COVID-19 and its variants.

As a result of this, a lot of business owners and employees are tired and are having a harder and harder time focusing on productivity while at home and isolated.

Below we have provided you with some tips on how you can boost your motivation during the workday.

1. Take notes.
Before you dive into your work each morning, make a list of all the things you need to accomplish for the day. Once you have complied a list, you can start to divide your tasks into categories like urgent, non-urgent, difficult, easy, and so on.

2. Tackle the project you dread doing the most.
We all have them – projects that we keep pushing off until the next day because we don’t seem to have the motivation to complete them. Try instead working on this project first, whether it’s making a phone call you’ve been putting off or a blog post idea that you can’t seem to formulate into words. Finishing that dreaded task can immediately alleviate a lot of stress and pressure if you just decided to tackle it instead.

3. Turn off distractions.
This is a hard one because we are all very connected to our devices but try putting your phone on silent or turning off notifications from your social media apps. You’ll be amazed at how focus you become during the day when you aren’t checking what’s coming through your phone every time it rings or vibrates.

4. Take breaks.
It’s important to take breaks throughout your workday for your mental and physical health. Stepping away from your laptop can help limit the strain on your eyes, avoid eating lunch and doing your work at the same time, stretch your legs by getting up from your chair, etc. You can also incorporate checking updates/notifications on your phone during your breaks.

5. Learn to say no.
You may not even realize it, but maybe you’re not able to focus throughout the day because you have too much on your plate. This can leave you feeling overwhelmed, not knowing where to start, thus making you less motivated to start. Like mentioned in point number one, take a look at your list and prioritize what needs to be done first. Maybe some of the “lesser” tasks can be passed on to another co-worker or held off for the time being. Don’t be afraid to bring it up with your manager or supervisor if you are feeling like you have too much to do, they will be able to assist you to come up with a plan on how to limit what’s on your plate.
